Maaden’s relationship with the communities surrounding our operations is paramount. We believe that sustainable progress is intrinsically linked to the well-being and longevity of these communities. We commit to avoid the physical and economic displacement of local communities wherever possible. This principle is embedded in our exploration, project development and operational practices, guiding our decisions from the earliest stages.
We undertake thorough assessments, including social impact assessments, human rights risk assessments, and livelihood assessments, and explore all viable alternatives to prevent the need for relocation. However, in exceptional circumstances, involuntary resettlement may be unavoidable. In such cases, Maaden pledges to develop and implement a resettlement action plan to manage such situations with the care, ethical rigor, and respect for human rights required to minimize and mitigate any negative impacts that could arise from resettlement of communities.
Our resettlement approach is informed by globally recognized frameworks, including the IFC Performance Standards on Land Acquisition and Involuntary Resettlement, and ICMM Principle 3.2 on Resettlement, along with relevant Performance Expectations and Position Statements.
We work transparently with local and national authorities and affected stakeholders to ensure that resettlement processes are conducted with respect for the rights and dignity of these stakeholders. We operate in full recognition and adherence to the rights granted to affected communities in all jurisdictions where we operate.
Our commitment entails:
A demonstrable and proactive commitment to avoiding displacement, ensuring it is a last resort, and only following comprehensive evaluation of all other options.
Application of fair, transparent, and timely compensation for any losses incurred, with the aim of ensuring affected individuals and communities are supported in rebuilding their lives.
Establish meaningful and sustained consultation with affected communities, ensuring their informed participation throughout the resettlement process.
A commitment to culturally appropriate measures for the preservation of heritage and the mitigation of social impacts.
Implementation of accessible and effective grievance mechanisms to address concerns promptly and impartially.
